Chair Welcome Letter

On behalf of the SCIP Board of Directors, it’s my pleasure to invite you to attend our 2007 International Annual Conference and Exhibition. We are delighted to be bringing the conference to New York City this year. We hope you will contribute your insights and your enthusiasm to the conference experience.

Coming out of the 2006 Annual Conference in Orlando, we asked attendees for suggestions on how to keep this event relevant to the needs of our members. What we heard is that you want more – more sessions, more new insights, and more opportunities to promote, as one attendee put it, “the adoption of CI as a cornerstone of the organization.”

Specifically, we heard our attendees say:

  • Show me something new. You’re eager to hear about ideas that will help you improve your practice of CI, especially when those ideas relate to analysis: “[I’ve done] CI 101 and would like the next level. I would like sessions that work through various analytical techniques.”
  • Help me deliver an impact. A seat at the table is a nice start, but it’s what you do with the seat that matters. You are looking for guidance on “how our clients can sharply improve the impact information and analysis have on their decision making.”
  • Give me some starting points. Many of our attendees are practicing CI with constraints on their resources. You may have to lobby hard for funding to attend the conference, and when you get back to the office, you need that investment to pay dividends quickly: “Sessions should be very nuts and bolts, with instantaneous applicability.”

As ever, our attendees also want to know how to do more with less. You and your peers are focused on “capturing market share and expanding technical expertise while holding down costs… pretty basic stuff.” Basic, perhaps, but never out of style.

Over the past few months, our Program Committee volunteers and the SCIP professional staff have worked to assemble a conference agenda that promises to deliver a great introduction to CI for newcomers, and some fresh ideas for veteran conference attendees. It’s a labor of love for all of us, and we hope you enjoy the results.

I look forward to seeing you in New York this spring.
